Jharal Yow Yeh. In 2011, anyone who was anyone in rugby league was talking about him.
Just over a year into his first-grade career, he earned a Maroon jumper to help Queensland defend their State of Origin title. He saw action on the field on 2011 for the Maroons as well as three matches for the Kangaroos, scoring two tries in three matches.
Adding another jersey to his representative wardrobe, Yow Yeh has also played three matches for the NRL All-Stars side.
But in the fourth match of the 2012 season, disaster struck for Yow Yeh and his proud Brisbane club. He suffered a compound fracture of his lower right leg. It was serious and certainly ended his fourth NRL season with the Broncos right there and then.
But that wasn’t going to stop Jharal Yow Yeh; even an injury that was described as “motorbike-like” and the “worst in 33 years” in rugby league.
“You can’t push injuries, especially ones like mine,” Yow Yeh told Broncos.com.au.
“I am confident that I’ll be right for next year. I just think back to all the good times playing footy, so I’m not willing to give up that easy,” he said.
Under the watchful and season eye of fellow Bronco Justin Hodges – who is also nursing a ruptured achilles tendon – Yow Yeh has completed an extensive rehabilitation programme with the club, who he says have “stuck by” him and are confident of a 2014 return to the NRL.
Named the Broncos Clubman of the Year, Yow Yeh’s sights are locked firmly ahead on the maroon and gold jersey.
“I’m pretty stubborn so hopefully come round one 2014 I have that Broncos jersey on and I’m running on to Suncorp.”
