The 2013 campaign was far from memorable for London Broncos, with the cash-strapped club finishing 13th in Super League. Despite fears about the future of the club from the likes of Martin Offiah, looking ahead, the club looks to be in a more promising position with the Broncos securing a location for their home games next term.
Meanwhile, chief executive Gus Mackay has said that the club is well set for the future, he said, “We now have the best structure to move forward that we haven’t had before. The next two years is about building that fan base and building the foundations to make the club bigger, better and stronger.”
Despite securing the future of the club off the field, a large number of of their players during 2013 have left the club, with captain Tony Clubb leaving for Wigan, while Jamie Soward’s short term deal came to an end, amongst others.
These departures have meant that the playing squad currently consists of just 12 members with less than two months until their opening game of the season. With relegation and promotion returning, on the pitch, the future could be said to be looking bleak for the Broncos.
However, despite obvious negative signs, this could be turned into a positive for the area.
The Broncos look likely to be forced to use an increased number of locally produced players, something which could improve the credibility of the club which has often been criticised for fielding a large number of overseas talent in the past.
This negative situation could help develop home grown talent, potentially improving interest in the club and arguably, this could encourage more children in the area get involved in Rugby League. Something which can only be positive as more youngsters look to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook and Kieran Dixon who have emerged as genuine talents in recent years.
