NSW Blues 12

Goals:Trent Hodkinson 2/3
The NSW Blues have hung on to record a 12-8 victory over the QLD Maroons in an epic State of Origin match at Suncorp Stadium.
52,100 fans were on hand to witness a modern day classic that had a bit of everything; injuries, spectacular hits, controversial calls, amazing defence and to top it off, a penalty to QLD after the siren, giving them one tackle to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
QLD dominated the opening minutes, and Darius Boyd crashed over in the 5th minute. Things turned sour for the home side when they lost halfback Cooper Cronk to a broken arm in the 10th minute, replaced by Daly Cherry-Evans.
The Blues opened their account in the 19th minute when the Morris twins combined and Brett reached out and slammed the ball down, hurting his shoulder in the process. He recovered and would go onto play a memorable match, including an incredible one on one tackle to deny Darius Boyd in the second half.
Jarryd Hayne was having an excellent game and scored the Blues’ second try in the 32nd minute, this time converted by Trent Hodkinson for a 10-4 lead, which they took into half time.
A 43rd minute penalty goal to Hodkinson edged NSW out to 12-4 before another Boyd try in the 56th minute brought them back into it. Thurston missed and the Blues enjoyed a narrow 12-8 lead. For the next 24 minutes NSW repelled set after set as QLD threw everything at them, but couldn’t puncture the Blues’ defence.
Then a penalty to QLD in the dying seconds gave them one tackle to score, but Billy Slater was engulfed by NSW defenders as he looked for space down the left edge and NSW celebrated a famous victory, their first game one win at Suncorp Stadium since 2003.
