An impressive performance by St George Illawarra has kept their season alive with a commanding 24-12 victory over the Melbourne Storm in freezing conditions at WIN Stadium in Wollongong tonight.
The Dragons dominated the match in front of 10,117 fans and ran in 5 tries against a Storm outfit that never really got into the match.
After a Gareth Widdop break early in the match, the Dragons opened the scoring when Josh Dugan crashed over in the 6th minute.
Widdop did it all himself in the 15th minute when his kick bounced between Billy Slater and Sisa Waqa and while both players watched the ball, Widdop pounced and scored his first try for the club. He converted to make it 10-0.
The Storm hit back through Billy Slater in the 27th minute, but the Dragons went into half time leading 10-6.
13 minutes into the second half the Dragons scored a lucky try when a Benji Marshall grubber fell into the path of Mitch Rein and he dove over. Widdop’s conversion made it 16-6.
Two tries in the space of six minutes put the result beyond doubt; in the 64th minute Dugan set up Jason Nightingale with a neat flick pass, then in the 70th minute a Widdop long pass found a flying Charly Runciman who scored in the corner.
The Storm managed a consolation try to Kurt Mann in the 75th minute but there would be no denying the Dragons this time as they made it 2 wins from their last 3 matches.
