Gold Coast Titans 18 (Dave Taylor, Anthony Don, James Roberts tries; Kevin Gordon 2, Anthony Don goals)
Parramatta Eels 24 (Jarryd Hayne 2, Ken Sio, Corey Norman tries; Chris Sandow 4 goals)
Jarryd Hayne brilliance has once again led the Parramatta Eels to victory, his side beating the Gold Coast Titans 24-18 at CBUS Stadium in front of 14, 175 fans.
The Eels had struggled in recent weeks, having lost four games on the trot, and the early signs weren’t good for snapping that streak.
When a simple cut out pass to David Taylor in the 5th minute allowed the fill in centre to crash over from close range.
After 18 minutes, Eels’ halfback Chris Sandow threw a dummy with his team right on the attack, the play causing the Titans defense to pause. Sandow then shifted the ball win winger Ken Sio, who had space to find his way to the line. Sandows conversion locked the game up at 6-all.
The Titans should have regained the lead in the 27th minute of play, when a cross field bomb was spilled by Eels’ winger Sam Radradra, however Anthony Don couldn’t gather the ball cleanly in attempting to score.
Radradra’s poor handling continued at the other end four minutes later when the big winger looked certain to score before dropping the football cold.
Hayne then denied Kalifa Fai Fai Loa in a solid one on one tackle over the try line meaning a Kevin Gordon penalty goal on half time gave the Titans a slim 8-6 lead at the break.
The missed opportunities continued after the break when Willie Tonga looked set to score before Dave Taylor knocked the ball from his grasp with the line begging.
Mid season Gold Coast recruit Daniel Mortimer showed his worth to the Titan’s side, when he put in a pinpoint kick for Anthony Don to collect and plant out wide for a 12-6 lead.
Enter Jarryd Hayne.
The fullback sparked the Eels into life, collecting the ball inside his own thirty before pushing off an attempted tackle from Greg Bird. The Parramatta number one approached fullback Kevin Gordon before showing enough speed to step around his opposite and plant the ball down in the corner.
The sideline conversion from Sandow saw the game once again level at 12-all.
The away side then took the lead for the first time in the match when Sandow stepped his way across fullback before Hayne hit the pass at speed to run 15m to score near the posts for an 18-12 lead.
And in the 69th minute of the match, the Paramatta side all but sealed the game when Daniel Mortimer looked to have cleaned up a Sandow grubber in the in goal area, only for Corey Norman to steal it legally and score the try under the posts.
The Titans scored a late consolation try when a wide shift of the ball ended with James Roberts, the Titans centre showing his speed by burning both Radradra and Hayne the conversion from Don at the siren leaving the score at 24-18 on fulltime.
