The Sydney Roosters have tonight climbed into the top 4 following a 30-22 victory over the St George Ilawarra Dragons at Allianz Stadium.
A small crowd of just over 13,000 witnessed a game in which the Roosters were always in control, and led 12-10 at half time, and got out to a 24-10 lead mid way through the second half.
The Roosters scored after 10 minutes through Michael Jennings, converted by James Maloney for a 6-0 lead. But the Dragons hit back through Brett Morris to trail 6-4 after 15 minutes.
The Dragons hit the lead after 23 minutes when Gareth Widdop put Joel Thompson into a gaping hole to score a try, converted by Widdop to make it 10-4. However, with 7 minutes left in the half, the Roosters scored through rookie winger Nene MacDonald, converted by Maloney to lead 12-10.
Just six minutes into the second half the Roosters extended their lead when Aidan Guerra reached out and planted the ball down. Maloney’s perfect night with the boot continued, and his side led 18-10.
This became 24-10 after 61 minutes when Jennings pounced on a Maloney grubbber for his second try.
The Dragons responded with a 70th minute try to Benji Marshall before the Roosters hit back when Jake Friend scored from dummy half, converted by Maloney to make it 30-16 with 6 minutes left.
A consolation try to Josh Dugan 2 minutes from full time rounded out the scoring on a night that pitted Captain America against Iron Man.
