The Brisbane Broncos have tonight beaten the St George Illawarra Dragons 30-22 in a clsssic match at Suncorp Stadium.
In front of a crowd of 36,720, both sides put on a show in a match that featured controversy, some amazing tries, a sin bin and a brave second half comeback.
The Broncos opened the scoring through halfback Ben Hunt, converted by Corey Parker in the 10th minute. The Dragons hit back with a try to winger Jason Nightingale after 14 minutes.
From then on it was all the Broncos who added three more converted tries to Hunt in the 24th minute, Matt Gillett in the 29th minute and former Dragon Daniel Vidot in the 36th minute.
The half time score of 24-4 to the Broncos left the Dragons with 40 minutes in which to save their season and they responded with a spirited performance.
After the controversial sin-binning of Matt Gillett, the Dragons added tries to Josh Dugan in the 54th minute and a runaway try to Joel Thompson in the 59th minute to get right back in the match at 24-16.
The Dragons weren’t finished yet and some Benji Marshall magic and hot potato football by his team mates resulted in a remarkable try out wide to Peter Mata’utia, converted by Widdop to make it 24-22.
However a late try to Gillett denied the Dragons, who were brave in defeat, while the Broncos kept their season alive, but face a tough trip to AAMI Park next week to play the Storm.
