The Gold Coast Titans ended 2014 in a positive way by upsetting the finals-bound Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs 19-18 in a golden-point thriller at CBus Super Stadium this afternoon.
The match farewelled two original Titans from 2007 in Mark Minichiello and Luke Bailey, who missed the game through injury.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a converted try to centre Tim Lafai for a 6-0 lead.
They doubled their lead in the 15th minute when English prop James Graham crossed for a rare four-pointer. Trent Hodkinson converted to make it 12-0.
Bulldogs veteran Reni Maitua scored in the 35th minute and Hodkinson added the extras to make it 18-0 and it looked as though the Bulldogs were cruising to victory.
The Titans were the first to score after the break when winger Kalifa Fai Fai Loa crossed in the 53rd minute. A converted try to their other winger Anthony Don 5 minutes later made it 18-10 and it was game on with 20 minutes left.
Minichiello grabbed a try in his final match for the Titans with 9 minutes left to make it 18-14 and Brad Takairangi tied it up at 18-all in the 77th minute.
Neither side could break the deadlock in the final minutes of normal time so it was off to extra time where Titans fullback William Zillman was the hero with an 84th-minute field goal.
