The Newcastle Knights finished season 2014 on a high with a thumping 40-10 victory over the St George Illawarra Dragons at Hunter Stadium in Newcastle today.
In front of over 20,000 fans, the Knights put on a show and dominated a match between two teams who could not make the finals, running in seven tries to two.
In the 5th minute Joseph Leilua celebrated game 100 with a try beside the posts, converted by Kurt Gidley for a 6-0 lead. This became 12-0 after 13 minutes when Jarrod Mullen stepped through some flimsy Dragons’ defence to score a simple try.
It became 18-0 after 20 minutes when Timana Tahu, on for the injured Leilua, strolled over out wide for his first try of the season.
The Dragons finally scored after 30 minutes when winger Brett Morris found space down the Knights’ right side for his 14th try of the season. The Knights would have the last say in the first half when winger Sione Mata’utia touched down in the 38th minute. Gidley converted and the Knights held a well- deserved 24-4 lead at half time.
Any hope of a Dragons comeback were extinguished when the Knights posted two tries in 10 minutes to start the second half and the score ballooned out to 34-4, with half an hour to play.
Sione Mata’utia’s second try of the afternoon made it 40-4, as the Dragons struggled to contain the home side.
A consolation try to Kyle Stanley 3 minutes from time ensured the Dragons at least finished the match on a positive note.
