The North Queensland Cowboys have moved into week 2 of the 2014 NRL finals following a 32-20 victory over the Brisbane Broncos at 1300SMILES Stadium tonight.

In front of over 25,000 fans, the Cowboys led 24-0 at half time and withstood a brave Broncos fightback in the second half to record their 11th victory at home in 2014.

After just 8 minutes a neat dummy-and-go move by Gavin Cooper fooled the Broncos’ defence and he dived over to open the scoring. Jonathan Thurston converted for a 6-0 lead.

Just two minutes later an angled run by Kane Linnett saw the Cowboys centre score a simple try. Once again Thurston converted to make it 12-0 after 14 minutes.

A lucky try to Robert Lui on 18 minutes extended the Cowboys’ lead and when Thurston converted from in front, his side lead 18-0 after 20 minutes.

Just 3 minutes from half time Cooper scored his second and with Thurston’s conversion the Cowboys enjoyed a 24-0 half time lead.

It took them 51 minutes but the Broncos finally got on the board when five eighth Ben Barba scooped up a loose ball and raced away to score out wide. Corey Parker missed the conversion attempt and his side trailed by 20 points.

Two tries in 5 minutes to Broncos centre Jordan Kahu got his side right back into the match at 24-14 with just over 20 minutes left, however a Michael Morgan try in the 65th minute and Thurston’s conversion kept the Broncos at bay and the Cowboys led 30-14.

Thurston kicked a 67th minute penalty goal to make it 32-14 and a 71st minute try to Broncos winger Daniel Vidot rounded out the scoring.

The Broncos season ends following the loss, while the Cowboys face the Sydney Roosters at Allianz Stadium on Friday night, the winner advancing to a preliminary final against the South Sydney Rabbitohs.
