Match Review

Rochdale Hornets coach Ian Talbot got the perfect birthday present as his side recorded a 44-6 win over local NCL Premiership side Rochdale Mayfield.

It was a bruising affair which the Hornets forward pack dominated, and although the Amateur side never stop battling the class of the League 1 outfit saw them to a comfortable victory.

It was apparent from the first whistle that it was a derby match as the hits flew in from both sides.

The opening try came after the returning Danny Yates stabbed a kick into the corner for debutant Dale Bloomfield to pounce on after six minutes.

It took nine minutes for the next score as good ball movement from halves Yates and Paul Crook resulted in another debutant crossing in the opposite corner, this time it was Ireland international Brad Hargreaves.

The visiting pack paved the way for another well worked try 21 minutes in as Yates found Crook before he returned the ball inside to fullback Wayne English who crossed the whitewash to score.

Crook converted English’s try as well as Bloomfield’s second five minutes later as the winger dove onto trialist Ryan Smith’s chip.

Dean Mignacca crossed with ten minutes left in the half after Bloomfield broke and found him in support, before Crook knocked over the conversion to give his side a 26-0 lead at the break.

The second half was a battle down the middle and Mayfield went down to 12 men on 50 minutes when the touch judge claimed to see Sam Butterworth catch a Hornets player with a knee in the tackle.

Almost immediately after the red card Smith dummied his way through the tiring home defence for a converted try.

On the hour mark it was Dave Hull’s turn to score as he picked up Jordan Case’s knock down before Case sent over the touch line conversion.

Mayfield would not lie down though as a good move started by player coach Matt Calland saw Rob Kershaw race away to break his side’s deadlock with a six pointer.

Man of the match Yates completed an impressive display with the last try of the game six minutes from time as he supported John Cookson’s break.

Case added the game’s last points with the conversion as his side ran out 44-6 winners.
