The St George Illawarra Dragons enjoyed a 14-12 win over Intrust Super Cup team the Mackay Cutters at Mackay Oval on Saturday night in the club’s first trial match of 2015.
Gareth Widdop, Leeson Ah Mau and Trent Merrin were amongst a host of new recruits and youngsters on hand as the Dragons got some much-needed game time under their belts.
With much of the first grade squad playing at the Auckland Nines, the Dragons scored three tries to two against a solid Cutters outfit.
The Dragons opened the scoring through Mackay native Dane Nielson, who ran onto a cut-out pass by Gareth Widdop to give his side a 4-0 lead.
However the Cutters hit back and took the lead with a converted try to utility Damon Koostra to lead 6-4 after 30 minutes of play.
Dragons second rower reclaimed the lead for the Dragons in the 51st minute but again the Cutters replied with a try of their own, this time to winger Jordan Periera, converted by Buchan Rawiti to make it 12-8.
Dragons winger Junior Vai Vai scored late to even it up and Drew Hutchinson converted to give the Dragons a narrow win, and a good hit out for the players ahead of their opening-round fixture against the Melbourne Storm on Monday, March 11.
St George Illawarra Dragons 14 (Nielson, Marketo, Vai Vai tries, Hutchison goal) defeated Mackay Cutters 12 (Koostra, Periera tries; Johnson, Rawiti goals) at Mackay Oval.
