NCL Division One side Normanton Knights made club history by reaching the fourth round of the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup, and were rewarded with a home tie against Championship side Batley Bulldogs.
The game will take place on Saturday afternoon at Bell Vue, home of Super League’s Wakefield Wildcats, with the sides battling it out for a place in the fifth round of the competition.
The Knights started their Cup journey with a 34-16 win over Myton Warriors before a second round scrap with Shaw Cross, edging the tie 12-4. A trip to Oulton Raiders in the third round saw the visitors run out 34-8 winners to set up a tie with Championship opposition.
John Kear’s men come into this game without a win since February, losing to Halifax, Sheffield and most recently 26-19 to Bradford Bulls. The Bulldogs have the perfect opportunity to bounce back on Saturday and get their cup run underway.
Normanton are one of three amateur outfits left in the competition and have the toughest tie of the trio having drawn second-tier opposition.
If they are to pull off a huge shock in the fourth round it would prove the magic of the Challenge Cup is well and truly alive. Batley must be aware of the Knights’ threat and avoid complacency if they are to continue their journey towards Wembley.
