A game that stuttered to get going this afternoon at Cbus Stadium on the Gold Coast with dropped ball and errors from both sides. Despite Souths having the majority of possession, Titans were the first to score in the tenth minute with Anthony Don going over in the right hand corner after some good lead up work. The conversion was unsuccessful. It took the Rabbitohs a while to break through Titans defence but after numerous attacking opportunities Greg Inglis scored a controversial try in the 22nd minute, which saw he video ref overrule the on field decision of no try for an on obstruction. Isaac Luke was able to convert, edging the Souths in front 6-4. In the final ten minutes of the first half the Titans attack at the right hand corner again, this time James Roberts goes over showing his impressive speed as he dummy’s and crosses the line effortlessly. Conversion successful by Aidan Sezer, giving the Titans the lead 10-6 as the first half wraps up.
It seems like a different Rabbitohs side came out in the second half as it only took them seven minutes to score their first points of the half. A strong break from Inglis puts his team at the other end of the field, followed by a short pass to Chris Grevsmuhl who falls through the defence to score. Luke’s conversion attempt was waved away as it hit the post, making the score 10-all. The 52nd minute saw a sure try for the Rabbitohs in the left hand corner but desperate Titans defence stopped them in their tracks. Not long after, an unintentional knee to the head takes Inglis from the field. In the 60th minute Alex Johnston, filling in at fullback, breaks through defence and scores under the posts. Luke converts, breaking the tied score to a 16-10 lead. Ten minutes later, Grevsmuhl goes over again the in same spot as his earlier try and Luke successfully converts taking Souths out to what appears to be a unsurmountable lead. However, the Titans are not done yet after a one on one strip from Sezer sees the them back with the ball and Don goes over again in the right hand corner. Conversion successful, 22-16 with five minutes to go. In the final minutes we see a nasty head clash between Luke Douglas and George Burgess which sees Burgess come off worse for wear and leaves the field. A certain try to Lachlan Burr which potentially could have locked up the game is denied as the ball is knocked out by a Rabbitohs hand. Soon after, the siren is sounded and a brave Titans side goes down to the Rabbitohs 22-16.
