Brisbane Broncos have upset the Canberra Raiders 24- 12 at GIO Stadium, on Saturday night.
It was a slow start to the game but the Broncos, despite missing two of their origin stars, Sam Thaiday and Justin Hodges, they added the first points of the night. Jack Reed broke through Raiders poor defence, flirted with the side line and scored on the left edge. Corey Parker successfully converted Reed’s try, which put the Broncos in the lead 6-0.
Following the try, Andrew McCullough kicked a 40/20 lifting his teammates and creating a great opportunity to score. After a great pass from Ben Hunt, Jordan Kahu ran straight through Raiders defence and scored in the corner. Corey Parker’s conversion luckily hit the upright and went through, extending the Bronco’s lead 12-0.
In the 23rd minute, Raiders came back after Edrick Lee had a brilliant try assist quickly passing to Blake Austin, who sprinted and scored a try. Croker successfully converted, Broncos remained in front leading 12-6.
Not long after in the 27th minute, Jarrad Kennedy went straight through a gap and scored for the Raiders. Croker added the extra two points and leveled the score, 12 all.
In the 29th minute, Raiders packed a scrum with 11 seconds hoping they could score again before the half time siren. This did not go in favour of the Raiders, instead Lee lost the ball just out from the Broncos line. Broncos took control, Ben Hunt ran along the sideline and instead of taking it out of play, kicked it to centre field, Anthony Milford gained possession passed to to Alex Glenn who then passed it along to Lachlan Maranta, resulting in Maranta scoring in the left corner. Jordan Kahu failed the conversion attempt but nonetheless Broncos went into half time leading 16-12.
It was all about the Broncos in the second half, keeping the Raiders scoreless.
After a slow start to the second half Broncos were first to score in the 57th minute, Corey Oates scoring near the left sideline. Corey Parker’s attempt at converting the try was unsuccessful and Broncos remained in the lead 20-12.
Following the try in the 63rd and 74th minute Corey Parker kicks two penalty goals extending the lead 24-12.
A highlight play for the Canberra Raiders in the 66th minute, Josh Papalli prepared, ran up and had a big copybook tackle on Josh McGuire. Unfortunately for the Raiders it did not have an affect on the end result.
