Not the game for defences! 14 tries were scored at The Shay in front of the Sky Sports cameras, resulting in some great entertainment if not edge of the seat stuff. Niall Evalds opened his team’s try-scoring account for the day on 10 minutes, and he doubled the tally two minutes later. Dane Manning got a score back for the hosts but four-pointers from Greg Johnson and Ben Jones-Bishop made sure the Red Devils ended the half on top. Evalds was at fault for Halifax’s first try of the second half as he dropped a Scott Murrell bomb adjacent to the sticks. Murrell picked up the pieces and the Fax fightback was on. However, a James Saltonstall knock-on was capitalised on by Evalds, who made quick amends for the error a couple of minutes before. Saltonstall and Jacob Fairbank then scored tries for Halifax, and suddenly the hosts were only a score behind. The hosts had good field position to threaten once again but an array of Salford breakaway tries killed any hope of a win for the Championship side. Both Johnson and Jones-Bishop got their hat-tricks before the end of the tie. A consolation try from Adam Tangata got the final scoreline a bit closer to what it should have been, but Salford, without being spectacular, got the job done comfortably in the end.
