An unbelievable 80 minutes of Qualifiers rugby. Sheffield Eagles were two scores ahead during the first half but fitness took its toll and Salford upped a gear or two to steer clear. However, the Eagles got back to within six points of their opponents with ten minutes remaining before Salford put the burners on to the finish. Weller Hauraki kicked off the scoring in the fourth minute but Sheffield hit back with three consecutive tries. Cory Aston, Menzie Yere and Quentin Laulu-Togagae all touched down to leave the Red Devils completely stunned. Harrison Hansen replied for the hosts but Rob Worrincy’s try with 15 minutes of the first period remaining regained the two score lead. Four tries for the hosts in just over ten minutes put them in front at the break. Josh Griffin scored twice before Liam Hood and Lama Tasi both touched down to round off an exciting half to say the least. Duane Straugheir kept Sheffield in the match with a four-pointer in the opening stages of the half. The tries weren’t as frequent leading into the final quarter, Straugheir’s score was the only one in the first 20 minutes of the first half. However, Niall Evalds extended Salford’s advantage just after the hour mark had passed but the drama wasn’t over. Scott Turner and Laulu-Togagae linked brilliantly for the former to go over the try-line. A conversion made it 40-34 to the hosts but a drop goal from Dobson and two tries for Salford killed off any hope of a surprise win for the Championship team. Thornley and George Griffin added the four-pointers to their side’s tally, an obstacle just about avoided for the Red Devils!
