North Queensland Cowboys’ 10 year drought of making it to a grand final has changed tonight. The Cowboys put on a spectacular show against Melbourne Storm at AAMI park infront of 29,315 fans winning 32-12.
It was a strong start for North Queensland Cowboys in the 6th minute when they thought they had scored the first try of the night but the video referee confirmed the no try after will chambers was obstructed.
After the Cowboys scared Melbourne again, Cooper Cronk was then over the line in the 10th minute. After a great short ball pass from Smith Cooper of found himself through a gap and over the line. First try of the game to Storm and Cameron Smith made no mistake to add the extra two points, 6-0.
North Queensland Cowboys responded well in the 14th minute as Justin O’Neill was next over the line scoring for Cowboys. Johnathan Thurston (JT) surprisingly missed the conversion, Storm remained in the lead 6-4.
Cowboys continued to keep possession and pressure the Storm after repeat sets. Justin O’Neill finished of the job for Cowboys with his second of the night, going over the line after running through a gap in Melbourne’s defence. JT manages to add the extra points by successfully kicking the conversion, Cowboys took control and the lead 10-4.
In the 32nd minute Melbourne Storm recieved their 3rd penalty in a row, assisting them over the line for their second try of the night. Tohu Harris was able to use his power to ground the ball over the line. Cameron Smith made no mistake, converting the try taking his team into the lead 12-10.
In the 39th minute Cowboys came back and responded with a brilliant try. Gavin Cooper using his strength to put it down in the corner after a great kick from JT, just before the half time break. JT successfully converts from right on the sideline, taking his team into the lead 16-12.
HALFTIME- Cowboys 16-12 Storm
After an intense start to the second half, the North Queensland Cowboys were able to score a terrific try in 54th minute after the ball was spread out wide for Morgan to score. JT unsuccessful to convert for the second time as they take the lead 20-12.
In amidst the try Melbourne Marika Korobeite was 50 then sent off to the bin for his punch on Cowboys Kane Linnett.
In 56th minute Michael Morgan scores another try after Hannent puts pressure on the kicker, Gavin Cooper picks it up and gives it to Morgan. Morgan then sprints the field and is over the line for another try. JT successfully converted this try and Cowboys extend their lead 26-12.
Cowboys had not finished off their job and in the 69th minute cemented their win with another try. After a great dummy from JT he successfully put Gavin Cooper over the line. Successfully converting this try and adding the extras cemented the win 32-12.
The Cowboys successfully kept the Melbourne Storm scoreless in the second half, with impressive defence.
