Huddersfield Giants beat Leeds Rhinos 22-14 at the John Smith’s Stadium to give themselves a chance of automatic qualification for next year’s Super League. Rick Stone’s men take on Hull Kingston Rovers next weekend, and the loser of that match will take part in the Million Pound Game against Salford Red Devils.
The Giants went into half-time with a 14-0 lead and they hit the front on 11 minutes through centre Leroy Cudjoe. Danny Brough couldn’t convert but he made amends by kicking a penalty goal soon after. Brough extended Huddersfield’s lead to eight points with another goal on the half-hour mark before Ryan Brierley notched a timely try for the hosts as he supported a break by Aaron Murphy.
Brough got himself on the scoresheet in the opening stages of the second half as he latched on to an offload before crossing the whitewash. He added the extras to his own try and it was an uphill battle for the Rhinos to get back into the contest. Adam Cuthbertson and Tom Briscoe scored a try each either side of the hour mark but Liam Sutcliffe could only convert on one occasion. Brough calmed nerves by kicking a penalty goal eight minutes from time prior to Ash Handley touching down for the Rhinos. Sutcliffe, once again, was off target with his conversion attempt and Huddersfield’s two score lead stayed with them till the end.
