Batley Bulldogs failed in their attempt to relegate Salford Red Devils to the Kingstone Press Championship as the latter won 42-14 at the Fox’s Biscuits Stadium. The Red Devils needed to win the match to face Hull Kingston Rovers next Saturday or else they would have been pondering life in the second tier following London Broncos’ victory over Featherstone Rovers.

The visitors got off to a great start with two tries inside the first 13 minutes through Gareth O’Brien and Junior Sa’u. O’Brien added the extras on both occasions. Wayne Reittie responded for the Bulldogs with his 100th career try but the Red Devils, who were attacking down the Mount Pleasant slope, registered four more tries before the interval to all but seal the win. Weller Hauraki bagged a brace and ex-Batley three-quarters Greg Johnson and Josh Griffin both crossed the whitewash for a try apiece as their current side went into the break 34-4 up.

Four tries were evenly split between the two sides in the second half and it was Reittie who got the ball rolling in the 42nd minute for Batley. In the final quarter, Robert Lui showed great footwork to touch down before Chris Ulugia cut the deficit for the West Yorkshire club. The final score of the contest went the way of O’Brien, who will be vital to Salford’s chances of survival when they take on Hull KR on Saturday.
