Primarily a backrower, versatile enough to play in the centres or on the wing, Kurt Capewell has agreed to terms in extending his stay at the Sharks beyond the 2017 season.
Off contract at the end of the year, Capewell’s new deal will see him remain a Shark for a further two years.
Arriving from the Ipswich Jets at the start of 2016, Capewell made the most of limited opportunities in the Sharks premiership winning NRL side last year, making four appearances throughout the season.
Amongst the highlights was a standout effort in a win over Canberra in week one of the finals and an outstanding debut match in the NRL against the Panthers in round 18.
The 23-year-old Capewell also travelled to the UK with the Sharks where he played on the wing in their World Club Challenge match against Wigan.
Sharks Coach Shane Flanagan had no doubt he could develop into a regular member of his NRL forward pack and was positive about Capewell’s future prospects.
“While he has had limited opportunity so far with the experienced back rowers we have at the club, Kurt is a quality and extremely versatile player and is certainly in our plans going forward,” Flanagan said. “We see him as a backrower and someone who can lock down a position in our NRL side and we are pleased he has agreed to extend his stay with us for another two years.”
Capewell was relieved to have put contract negotiations behind him, to have made a decision about his footballing future and to now be able to concentrate on this weekend’s game and the season ahead.
“I’m happy to get it done and get it out of the road and look forward to this weekend, so i’m pumped,” said Capewell.
Included in the Sharks 17 for this week’s clash with Penrith, Capewell’s utility value is set to be an asset to coach Shane Flanagan on Sunday as his team looks to record their fourth win in succession.
