Challenge Cup Final 2017. Opinion: The Writers’
Here at Nothing But RL, we love everything Rugby League. This week it’s the prestigious Challenge Cup Final at Wembley Stadium, and we’ve taken some time out to look ahead to the occasion, and share our thoughts on what we think might happen on Saturday afternoon.
So, who are they backing, and why?
Supports: Wigan Warriors.
Who will win the Challenge Cup: Wigan Warriors (shock horror, right?)
How do you think the game will go: I think it’s going to be a really tight game, very similar to last years – just hopefully with a different winner. The forwards will play a huge part, and the strength and power of the Hull pack will be tough to handle. The clash between George Williams and Albert Kelly will be great to watch as they’re both the big danger men in their sides. The full-back battle will be interesting to watch, as Jamie Shaul has now overtaken Sam Tomkins in the England ranks, so the Wigan man will have something to prove, and there’s no bigger or better stage than Wembley! I’ll be very surprised if one side runs away with it – Wigan Warriors by 6.
Lance Todd Trophy Prediction: Tom Davies. He’s a huge outsider for the award, but if Wigan win the game, I’d expect him to get a couple of tries and put in a superb performance in doing so. He’s come on leaps and bounds as the seasons gone on, while keeping the highly rated Liam Marshall out of the side.
Supports: London Broncos
Who will win the Challenge Cup: Hull FC.
How do you think the game will go: Hull are the classier and more consistent team. Sneyd and Kelly will outperform Williams and Leuluai in every aspect. Last weekend for Hull can be taken with a pinch of salt because they probably had an eye on this week – whether it be subconsciously or not, and they were actually playing a good, in-form side unlike Wigan with Salford. The only half decent side Wigan have beaten recently is Huddersfield so they’ll need to do a lot more to beat a consistent and classy Hull side, they are undoubtedly overrated but you can never underestimate jammy Sam Tomkins. Really it should be Hull by 10 or more but it’s finals rugby so it’ll be far tighter – so probably Hull by 6.
Lance Todd Trophy Prediction: Marc Sneyd – the man’s a magician. But then again, Bentham is refereeing so anything could happen.
Supports: Wigan Warriors
Who will win the Challenge Cup: Of course, I’m going Wigan.
How do you think the game will go: Hull have pushed Wigan right to the brink and gotten the better of them in recent ties between the two sides, with performances from Wigan a far cry from their routine victory over Hull FC in their last Challenge Cup Final meeting in 2013. Hull have shown what a fantastic team they are this year, once again cementing their spot high in the league table and getting themselves to Wembley for a chance to continue their status as holders. However, Wigan have come into a good run of form, which could see them right on the night. Williams and Burgess are linking up exceptionally well this year, Sam Tomkins is a great leader from the back and young winger Tom Davies has really settled in to the first team. Obviously, it won’t be an easy ride – Gareth Ellis will be hoping to bow out with another Cup Final win before his retirement at the end of the season, so he will be on top form and Kelly and Sneyd will always be a threat to Wigan. I definitely think it will be a close affair, but I’m hoping Wigan have the energy to nick it, Wigan to win by 8 points.
Lance Todd Trophy Prediction: George Williams. There is a reason he becomes Wigan’s second marquee player next season. He is a great work force on the field, he is constantly looking for options on the field and has bagged a shed load of assists this year. If he creates as much as he is capable of, and Wigan get the win, he’s definitely a top shout for the Lance Todd.
Who will win the Challenge Cup: Wigan
How do you think the game will go: Hull will push Wigan close, as they have a lot recently, but the Warriors will grind out a famous Wembley victory
Lance Todd Trophy Prediction: Sam Tomkins.
Who will win the Challenge Cup: Wigan
How do you think the game will go: I think it will be a tight game, there’s very few blowouts at Wembley but Wigan just have the edge with their big game experience. Half backs are always important in big high profile games and this shouldn’t be an exception.
Lance Todd Trophy Prediction: George Williams is a talented half back, who is only going to get better and should he perform to his usual standards – I think he will get the Lance Todd.
Supports: No Preference
Who will win the Challenge Cup: Wigan Warriors
How do you think the game will go: They are used to the big occasions and I think they’ll step up and win this one too. They come into the final in good form having won their last two.
Lance Todd Trophy Prediction: George Williams is the bookied favourite to win it, and I’d have to agree with them. He’s a great talent and could be the difference maker in this game.
