Wigan fans backing boys to win it at Wembley

Despite currently holding the title of Super League Champions and World Champions, the Challenge Cup is one trophy which has somewhat evaded the Warriors in recent years, having not made it to a Challenge Cup Final since their last outing in 2013.

They beat Hull FC 16-0 on that day, in a routine victory in the rain, to lift the trophy at Wembley Stadium. This Saturday sees history repeat itself in a replay of that 2013 fixture, but hopefully this time the weather won’t be quite as disappointing.

The Airlie birds are the current holders of the prestigious cup after overcoming Warrington Wolves at the London venue this time last August. On paper, Hull look the better on paper after a strong and promising 2017 Super League Campaign. Wigan come into the game as underdogs, after Hull beat the Warriors home and away this year – it will definitely be a test for the Cherry and Whites.

Their fans, however, have no doubts and are bubbling with confidence ahead of a Wembley weekend, tipping their boys to go the distance on Saturday afternoon. Here’s what they think:

Jon Alty

Jon thinks Wigan will win the Challenge Cup based on their recent improvements in attack. He worries that Hull’s pack will be too mobile for Wigan, but feels that Wigan can make it hard for Hull and will test them. He also thinks Sam Tomkins will be the one to get the Lance Todd Trophy on Saturday afternoon.

Graham Ward

Graham also thinks that Wigan’s attack is something of a positive ahead of the final, paired with the fact that the Warriors’ defence has only conceded 10-points in the last two games. “I can’t remember any breaks down the middle” he said. Graham is backing the bookies favourite, George Williams, to get the Lance Todd Trophy.

Gail Featherstone

Gail praises Wigan’s never say die mentality , which puts fear into other teams. After a season of injuries, Gail is happy that the team is near to full-strength again and that returning players are starting to click and find form.

She thinks the Hull forwards will be a bit of a handful, as they have proved in the past. However, she said: “The famous Wembley turf is a very spacious pitch which will provide the stage for some scintillating tries and I think our back line has the quality, speed and class to win it for the Cherry and Whites.” Gail is another one tipping for some ‘Tomkins Magic’ hoping for Sam Tomkins to get the Lance Todd.

Andy Smith

Andy thinks Hull will be a difficult side to break down, particularly if they played as they did in the semi-finals. He is going for Hull to be ahead at the half-time hooter, but feels Wigan will grow into the game to take the win at full time.

Just another fan of many who thinks full back Sam Tomkins will play out of his skin to win the Lance Todd Trophy.

Twitter: @IainWarriorsFan

Iain puts it simply on Twitter, he thinks Wigan will win based on their experience in big games as opposed to Hull FC. He thinks the Warriors number 6, George Williams, will be the one to get the Lance Todd Trophy.
