After a brilliant season which has seen them left the League Leaders Shield, Castleford have made it to the Grand Final after Luke Gale kicked a field goal in Golden Pont extra time.
Adam Milner saves Tigers with last ditch tackle
In a game that was back and fourth for 80 minutes a defining moment came late on when Tommy Makinson received a pass out wide with Milner forcing the St Helens man into touch.
That wasn’t his only contribution as moments later he managed to find the try line, a try that proved to be vital in Castleford’s win.
Saints continue to make errors!
St Helens have failed to impress this season with head coach Justin Holbrook admitting in the past that they make too many mistakes. And this was proved in last nights game, most notably the fact that they knocked on multiple times near the try line which could have seen them win.
However the error that ended their season was the penalty Castleford received in the final minute of the game that drew things level.
It was the last tackle and a kick by Luke Gale found the goal area and it looked like Saints had won, but James Child ruled that Ryan Morgan had stopped Michael Shenton.
Luke Gale is the hero again!!
Like he has time and time again this season, Luke Gale proved why he is nominated for the Steve Prescott Man Of Steel.
Having been out for two weeks due to an appendix injury, Gale played like he hadn’t missed two games. His high bomb kicks left the Saints defence confused, this paired with another 40/20 was the crown and glory except it wasn’t.
Last month saw Castleford defeat Wakefield 25-24 with Gale kicking a field goal. But could he do it again, it was the last tackle and having played six minutes of golden point he calmy slotted the ball home to send Castleford to Old Trafford.
Glimpse of old Saints return
Saints have been poor this season, however last night saw a glimpse of what they can do as a team.
Its been three years since Saints where last in a grand final, and its been over a decade since we saw there aggressive style of rugby and the added flare.
But last night saw that return paired with some smart decisions they could be set on a grand final in the next season. However they do need to improve especially on having a good goal kicker with Mark Percival missing 6 of his 7 goals which eventually cost them the game.
