CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND-UP | Toronto claim shield, Toulouse share the points

Round 20 of the Betfred Championship saw Sheffield travel away to Lamport Stadium looking to claim the two-points from table-toppers Toronto, whilst  the bottom of the table saw a big clash at the Crown Oil Arena. Here’s the full round-up…

Toronto Wolfpack went into their home match knowing the win would claim them the League Leader’s Shield in the Betfred Championship, and that’s exactly what they did.

Paul Rowley’s side showed a dominant performance over Sheffield Eagles with a 68-4 victory, which saw the side claim the Shield with 18 wins in 20.

That’s their second trophy in just two years of existence, and the team will look to go one further and claim their spot in the Super League.

The home-side had the advantage with just 10 minutes to play, but a try from Eddie Battye and a late penalty kick from Keiran Dixon saw the two teams share the spoils in a 20-20 draw.

At the rear end of the table, Rochdale Hornets snatched the victory from Stuart Littler’s Swinton Lions following a last-minute try from Morgan Smith. Swinton had the lead for the entire game, but a charge down from the Warrington dual-registration player sees Rochdale go joint on points with Swinton at the bottom of the table.

In a weekend of late comebacks, Dewsbury Rams managed to claim the win over struggling Barrow Raiders, who have recently announced their financial difficulties, including a fundraiser page to see out the season. Lucas Walshaw scored the try in the 73rd minute, which saw the player claim the man of the match from the Dewsbury social media accounts.

In-form Halifax continued to impress the Championship and further claim their spot in the all-important top four following a victory over Featherstone Rovers, as Scott Murrell claimed man of the match with three try assists.

The two points sees Richard Marshall’s side go on top of Rovers in the table to third spot, with Featherstone just one-point ahead of fifth-placed London.

Leigh Centurions also continued their push for a top-four place following a 30-12 victory over Batley Bulldogs at the Fox’s Biscuits Stadium.

Kieron Purtill’s side are now two-points behind Featherstone thanks to braces for Ilias Bergal and Harrison Hansen, plus further scores from Ryan Bailey and Ben Reynolds.

A big week awaits in round 21 of the Betfred Championship…
