Recap

Melbourne Storm successfully got out of trouble defeating the Newcastle Knights, 20-16 in Round 19 at Hunter Stadium Newcastle.

  1. QLD Origin stars return makes impact

Cameron Smith and Cooper Cronk all followed up from Origin on Wednesday night, after their loss against NSW to make a huge impact on their club side. After a close half time gap of 8-6, Melbourne Storm managed to get out of trouble and win by comfortable four points (one try). Smithy was a bit rusty with his conversions after only converting two out of the four opportunities.

The week before Origin they had won comfortably 48-6 against Brisbane Broncos but this week were given a good run after Newcastle came close to beating currently the top team.

  1. Is Gagai overrated?

Dane Gagai was ruled out of the clash against QLD Origin teammates due to a leg injury. The Newcastle Knights did not seem to miss Gagai as much as you’d expect after they nearly took the lead at half time before Melbourne scored in the 25th minute.

Pat Mata’utia did an exceptional job replacing him as the Knight’s fullback after allowing Brendan Elliot to score in the 67th minute.

Dane Gagai became well known after scoring three tries in the maroon’s jersey for QLD but has he been affective for Newcastle Knights?

  1. Newcastle were unlucky at home

Newcastle were coming back scoring in the 77th minute, but did not hold enough experience for victory just falling one try short. They have not been performing badly but just not good enough to claim victory. Knights had an unlucky game away from home in round 17 by being in front most of the game, attacking well before Canberra got away to also win by 4 points.

The knights need to ensure they come out and play the full 80 minutes (in attack and defence) and reduce errors made during the game.

Newcastle will have another tough game next week, as they will face second place on the ladder, the Cronulla Sharks away from home next Sunday 24th.

  1. Brendan Elliot scores his first in red and blue colours

Brendon was a mid- season signing for the Knights and tonight successfully contributed with a try to his name at last. He has been quiet in the last couple of games with adjusting to the side but his hard work has paid off today after scoring in the 66th minute. He would be slowly adjusting to losing as Newcastle made this their 11th consecutive loss.
