Cronulla Sharks vs Newcastle Knights

Recap

The Cronulla Sharks have extended their record winning streak to 15 matches, after thrashing the lowly Knights 36-4 at Southern Cross Group Stadium on Sunday afternoon, in front of almost 17,000 fans.

You’re a wizard, Barba.
Ben Barba continued his incredible form against the Knights, bagging two tries and setting up another two as the Sharks fullback had a day to remember. He was also denied a try by the bunker controversially, when Michael Ennis was ruled to have obstructed a Knights’ defender near the half way line as Barba steamed through. It seemed the video referee was the only one who was able to deny Barba, who is in vintage form and leading the Sharks’ charge towards the minor premiership.

Knights season summed up in a scrum.
The Newcastle Knights have had a horrid season, tasting victory just once in 2016. They extended the losing misery to scrums yesterday, when the Sharks managed to hook the ball out their own side, despite the Knights having the feed. It was another example of their inexperience, and allowed the Sharks to score another try through the hands, as the Knights were stretched on the far side.

Mullen’s luckless run continues.
Jarrod Mullen, who returned from injury against the Storm, was due to play a key role in the Knight’s game on Sunday, organising the team around the park early on. His luck with injuries however would rob the team of his presence before half time, with Mullen succumbing to a hamstring injury and leaving the field. It seemed to throw the visitors in to disarray, with the Sharks running away with the game from that point onwards.

Sharks score eight, kick two conversions.
In some ways, the scoreline flattered the visitors, with the Sharks scoring eight tries, but, with regular goal kicker James Maloney rested, only landing a total of two conversions. While Nu Brown filled in admirably at pivot for Maloney, his importance to the side was highlighted, with no obvious choice for backup goal kicker.
