Eagles still alive
Manly made it four wins on the spin to keep their top eight hopes alive, as their late season surge has put pressure on the teams above them. Albeit they came up against the team bottom of the ladder, they still put in a great performance to ease past Newcastle and go within two points of a finals spot. They face an out of sorts Parramatta Eels in Round 22 and will be confident that they can make it five straight next week.
Round 26 can’t come quick enough for Newcastle Knights, as they slumped to a 13th straight defeat, with only one win to their name all season. It has been a tough year for Nathan Brown’s men as they have been way off the pace since Round 1, and they were blown away at Brookvale Oval on Sunday. They have four home games in a row now and will be looking to restore some pride in the shirt, as they try to pick up as many points as possible and end their baron run.
Tommy T is number 1
Young fullback Tom Trbojevic was at his electrifying best at Brookvale, as he came up with a hat-trick of try assists in the first period to punish the Knights. In the absence of Brett Stewart he took the one shirt and made it his own, as he was a menace every time he touched the ball. Now the Manly head coach has to make a decision on whether Trbojevic is now his number one choice at the back, whether Stewart is fit or not.
Late raid not enough
Despite being outplayed for the majority of the game, the Knights won the second half and finished with a late flurry, scoring two tries in the final three minutes. The last of those tries came on the hooter, as Brendan Elliot dove over in the right corner with a spectacular finish. Although it wasn’t enough to save them from another defeat, it gave the away support something to shout about and could be something to build on in the coming weeks.
