The Capras had a tough season last year, and thanks to the foibles of the draw begin this season with the hardest hosting in the competition. PNG Hunters are the most travelled team in the competition and will enjoy the drop in humidity as they journey down to Rockhampton. Tough games can sometimes expose weakness, or they can reveal the grit of the player.
Who to Look Out for:
Guy Williams will lead his team out on to Browne Park knowing he has a tough game in front of him. I do not doubt that he is relishing this opportunity and lifting his team for the encounter. Lock Gavin Hiscox is his co-captain and will use his experience to try and shut down the large Hunters Pack. How they lead their team will set the tone for their season, regardless of this matches outcome.
Ase Boas will lead the Hunters, the dynamic half back will look to improve on the Hunters good season last year and provide both a tough target to tackle and to also provide a point of attack that will guide his fast backline into their opponent’s backfield. The Hunters are primed for a good season and Ase Boas will be key to their progress.
How they will win:
Capras must stick their tackles and prevent the offloads. With a patient game plan and solid defence, they need to control the ball and frustrate the Hunters into errors. They do have the players take the game to the Hunters, they must work as a team to drop their more fancied opponents and start the season with a victory.
The PNG Hunters have the quality and the size to take it to any team in the competition. How they play the mental game has repeatedly exposed a fragility. The Hunters are easily capable of the most exciting rugby league in the competition, bringing this level of game to every match will be how they control their destiny.
The Hunters would normally be heavily favoured in this contest, but first round jitters can hit any side. They should be able to handle both the weather and the Capras to start the season with a bang. PNG Hunters to win by 8.
