Games between the two Gold Coast sides are always an interesting encounter with pride on the line for being the Gold Coast’s top Intrust Super Cup side, and there’s no better timing for this clash than to headline the XXXX Rivalry round.
Adding to the interest is the fact that both of these sides currently sit on 0 points for the 2017 season. A win is desperately needed for both sides, as a sixth consecutive loss will likely means that side can be counted out of September football.
The lack of wins would surprise some given that the Bears are reigning premiers, but with the Titans suffering the worst injury toll of any NRL team, it affects the players available to both clubs.
Burleigh haven’t been too far away in 2017, two of their five losses have been by 2 points or less, and in their largest loss against Redcliffe in Round 1 they weren’t too bad at all. All they may need is a win to boost the confidence, and they are favourites to do so this weekend.
Tweed Heads already have a points difference of -80, and have suffered two losses of 30+ and at this stage would be favourites for the wooden spoon. But they proved against Wynnum on Stradbroke Island that they are capable of good things as they led 18-0 in that match after just 10 minutes. With a little more luck they may still be able to turn their 2017 season around.
WHO TO LOOK OUT FOR
A great battle, and one that will shape the winner of this match is the contest between the Co captain-props. Luke Page is a fiery big man who was one of their best in their Grand Final win last season, and Damian Sironen is back at the Seagulls after not quite being able to crack into the NRL. He did win back to back NSW Cups with Newcastle and Illawarra. Coincidentally Sironen played against Page in the State Championship for the Cutters against the Bears last year. That result went to Sironen, will Luke Page get revenge?
