Ipswich Jets vs Norths Devils

A weekend that started off not so great for Ben Hunt has got its silver lining, as he was part of the Ipswich side that had a big win over the Norths Devils, and with the unfortunate injury to Anthony Milford on Friday night for the Broncos, he may have found a way back to the NRL quicker than probably originally thought.

Ben Hunt wasn’t the only thing that looked different on Saturday afternoon as the Jets turned out in the unfamiliar Blue, Purple, Pink and White to promote the Domestic Violence Action Centre.

Whatever the combination it worked for the Jets who had a very comfortable win over Norths, a side that they were equal on points with heading into the weekend. The home side scored four tries in each half, with doubles to Wes Conlon and Richard Pandia.

The Devils scored four tries in 14 minutes from the 63rd minute, but by then it was far too late, as Ipswich had the game under control almost throughout. An early unconverted try to each side saw the game in a deadlock of 4-4 until Nemani Valekapa scored in the 17th minute. From there it was all Jets as they led 22-4 at the break, and by the 60th minute were 38-4 in front.

With the Blackhawks drawing Mackay, these two sides had a chance to get an extra point closer to the Top 6, and Ipswich took full advantage today.

Tries: Wes Conlon (3m), Nemani Valekapa (17m), Richard Pandia (31m), Richard Pandia (38m), Jesse Roberts (42m), Seb Pandia (48m), Wes Conlon (59m), Lachlan Roe (74m)
Goals: Wes Conlon 4 Conv, 1 Pen Luke Capewell 1 Conv

Tries: Javarn White (11m), Michael Lucas (63m), Delouise Hoeter (67m), Luke Pollock (70m), Michael Lucas (77m)
Goals: Chris Sandow 2/5 Conv

Saturday’s clash between two sides just out of the Top 6 and looking to stay in touch would have been a good enough reason to follow the Jets v Devils at North Ipswich Reserve. But the game has now been hijacked by the Ben Hunt show, as the star Broncos halfback, and Million Dollar Dragons from next year gets a taste of Intrust Super Cup for the Jets.

The game is bound to feature many times the attention it normally would, and most of those eyes will be on the Broncos cast off.

Last Time Out:

Both sides played the top 2 sides last weekend, and both sides were very competitive. The Devils held the competition leading Hunters at half time, and Ipswich were leading the second placed Sunshine Coast Falcons well into the second half. Even though both sides lost it was a competitive enough showing from both.

It has been a tough run of fixtures for both sides, as they have both had to play the Hunters and Falcons in the last three weeks. Neither side have had a victory.

Who to Look Out For:

Normally you would offer up a Michael Purcell or a Delouise Hoeter, both of whom are in sparkling try scoring form. Or even Chris Sandow who has returned to the Devils after spending some time out of the first team.

But all eyes will no doubt be on the million dollar man Ben Hunt trying to weave his magic for the Jets.

How They Will Win:

Can the Devils withstand the ad lib style of the Jets. They got a taste of it last weekend against the Hunters, but Ipswich is a completely different story.

If Ipswich can hold onto the ball they probably have just enough fire power to beat Norths. But the big question is whether the inclusion of Ben Hunt will help or hinder their usual style of rugby league.

Before Ben Hunt was named Ipswich looked the winners, but to answer the question above of help or hinder, I say hinder. Norths by 4.
