The Norths Devils handed over the competition’s worst losing streak to their vanquished foe from Saturday night as they ended a horror run of losses against the Northern Pride in Cairns, whose losing run now equals the one Norths just ended. The visitors put in a good performance to respond to the news before the game that head coach Mark Gliddon will step down at the end of the season.
A perfect conversion rate by Hayden Lipp and three penalty goals flattered Norths a little, as there was only one try in the game having outscored the Pride four tries to three.
The Pride were also level with the Devils just after half time when Marcus Jensen scored just after the break, and at 14-14 had the perfect opportunity to add more misery to Norths. That is after they had scored first and lead twice in the first 40 minutes.
But Norths did all the scoring from that point with a pair of tries and a penalty goal sealing the result and breaking a long run of defeats. Whether the win is in time to save their finals hopes remains to be seen. For the Pride they are now equal on points with Tweed Heads at the bottom of the Intrust Super Cup ladder.
NORTHS DEVILS 30
Tries: Jai Arrow (11m), Matiu Love-Henry (33m), Delouise Hoeter (48m), Jarryd Dodd (64m)
Goals: Hayden Lipp 4/4 Conv, 3 Pens
NORTHERN PRIDE 14
Tries: Sheldon Powe-Hobbs (4m), Shawn Bowen (25m), Marcus Jensen (41m)
Goals: Jodran Biondi-Odo 1/3 Conv
Two strugglers meet in Cairns on Saturday evening, with the Pride having not won in six games, and the visiting Devils not won in seven.
Norths’ losing run has seen coach Mark Gliddon announce that he will step down at the end of the season, and the form slump is a shame for the Devils as they had led the competition at some stage in the 2017 season. No sign of the big name signing Chris Sandow either. There’s still quality in the backline headlined by Michale Lucas and Delouise Hoeter who have scored 20 tries between them in 2017.
Northern Pride need a win just as badly, as a bye and guaranteed two points for last placed Tweed Heads will put pressure on the Pride to avoid defeat and being on equal points as the Seagulls. They haven’t been too far away of late form wise against the Hunters and Mackay, so should be confident to beat the Devils.
Either way it looks like either team will end a long losing run this weekend.
