Townsville wrapped up the Foley Shield as best team in the north and maintained their unbeaten record against the Pride and Cutters with a second win over the Northern Pride for 2017 which saw the Cairns based side record their eighth straight loss.
It was a tale of two halves in Townsville as the Blackhawks opening try in the 8th minute with added conversion was the only points of the first 40 minutes. Despite the gap in form and ladder position the Pride came out fighting in the second initially, and by the 51st minute were just 12-10 as the team traded tries.
But that was all the joy the Pride were going to have as the Blackhawks found another gear, and four tries in 17 minutes to continue their turnaround in form and keep alive their hopes for a top two finish. They are three points from the second placed Falcons. Northern Pride are equal last on points with the Tweed Seagulls, the Round 24 clash between the two sides looms as all important.

A great northern rivalry will play out on Saturday night in Townsville as the Blackhawks welcome the Pride for the last meeting of the three teams involved in the Foley Shield, Mackay being the other. The Blackhawks have wrapped that up with two wins and a draw from their three games so far.
The Northern Pride lost the game of the two teams with the worst losing streak in 2017 when they went down to Norths last weekend, and their seven straight losses equals the Devils as the competition’s longest losing streak for the season. But despite the losses the Pride haven’t been too far away, only averaging a 10 point loss in that run which included a 21 point loss to the high flying Falcons. They pushed the competition leader PNG Hunters a few weeks back in Cairns losing the lead with just eight minutes to go. Despite being reasonably competitive, they haven’t won since beating the Tweed Heads Seagulls in May.
It will be hard for the Pride against a team who is finding their mojo again, having not lost in three, which includes defeating the Falcons. They have also turned their patchy home form around with 3 wins and a draw from their last 4 home games. Like Easts, Townsville need to win to stay in touch with the very top of the ladder, and common sense says that they will do just that. But local rivalries are different beasts.
