Match Review

The Brisbane Broncos have upset the Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs 18-12 in their opening round National Rugby League encounter at ANZ Stadium on Friday, in front of 18,040 fans.

The Broncos have been tipped for a long season in 2014, however they started their season quickly, jumping out of the blocks to take a 12-0 lead after just 17 minutes of play.

The first try came courtesy of the clubs new signing, former Bulldog Ben Barba, much to the disgust of the home fans, who jeered his every touch.

Barba slipped out of the attempted tackle of Josh Morris before kicking in behind the Dogs line or Dale Copley to score.

Daniel Vidot claimed the second try, when he manage to wrestle his way free over the try line to plant the ball down, and when Hunt collected a penalty goal in the 29th minute, it looked as though the Bulldogs could be in for a long night.

The home side came roaring back however, scoring both sides of the break to find themselves just two points behind.

The momentum swing began when Brisbane’s Martin Kennedy hit Bulldog James Graham high, sparking a melee to break out under the Bronco’s posts.

The ensuing penalty saw josh Morris take a leaping catch to plant the ball down to open the 2014 account for his side after 35 minutes of play.

Tony Williams then crossed after some busy play from Josh Reynolds, who ran a wraparound play before putting the ball on the chest of the charging T-rex who burst through close to the line.

With everything going the way of the Bulldogs, Brisbane were forced to show their grit in defence, however were lucky to not lose their lead in the 63rd minute when Bulldogs lock Dale Finucane lost the ball over the try line.

Michael Ennis was then held up twice while over the try line, before the Broncos seized the initiative and the two points, when a diving Lachlan Maranta planted the ball over in the corner to grab the win for the valiant away side.
