Match Review

The Brisbane Broncos gave the Sydney Roosters a mighty scare, before the defending premiers scored two late tries to steal the game 30-26, in front of 33, 381 fans at Suncorp Stadium.

After winning their first two games of the season, the Broncos were keen to show they were premiership contenders by beating the champions, and looked to have done just that, when they lead by eight points with just six minutes to go in the game.

However, the Roosters showed their muscle and grit to turn the game on its head, scoring twice in the last five minutes to steal the match and break the home side’s hearts.

The match started well the Brisbane side, who scored after just five minutes when Gillett swivelled towards the short side from dummy half and passed to Ben Hunt, who dummied before diving over the stripe.

It was a short lived joy however, when former Rooster Martin Kennedy dropped the ball from the restart allowing the Roosters to hit straight back through Jennings.

In the 15th minute of the game, the Roosters took the lead when a charging Sam Moa carried three Broncos defenders to the line before forcing the ball down.

However, the see sawing nature of the game continued when Ben Hunt’s grubber kick was attacked and dropped by Minichello, before being pounced on by Sam Thaiday, with the ensuing conversion locking the game at 12-all, a score line that remained at the break.

The Broncos gained the ascendency again in the 52nd through a Corey Parker penalty goal, and scoring an unconverted try in the 56th when Thaiday drew in defenders close to the line before Andrew McCullough shifted the ball to Hunt who se cut out pass to Lachlan Maranta saw the winger dive over untouched.

As was the nature of the game, the Roosters hit back in the 60th minute following a flowing backline move that saw Centre Shaun Kenny Dowell manage to reach for the line and maintain control of the ball to score, and lock the game up once more.

The Broncos were determined to get back in front and managed to do so in the 69th minute when a lovely flat cut out pass from Josh Hoffman hit Jack Reed on the chest, the English born centre crossing the line out wide, with Parker unable to convert.

With just eight minutes left in the game, Ben Hunt extended the margin to eight, the biggest lead of the match, when he showed energy and determination running to the line, before throwing a dummy to Jack Reed and shrugging off the attention of a would be defender to score.

And while the lead looked likely to be enough, the Roosters came to life, scoring first through Roger Tuivasa-Sheck after 75 minutes of play, before Mitchell Pearce threw a sublime short ball to Boyd Cordner at full flight, who pierced the Broncos defence and slid over to steal the two competition points.
