Gold Coast Titans 12 (David Mead, Aiden Sezer tries; Sezer 2 goals)
Brisbane Broncos 8 (Ben Hunt try; Corey Parker 2 goals)
The Gold Coast Titans continued their impressive start to 2014 with a hard-fought 12-8 victory over the Brisbane Broncos at CBUS Super Stadium on Friday night.
The Titans didn’t lead until the 74th minute of the match, and it was a brilliant try to David Mead that stood out in a match dominated by defence.
It took 33 minutes for the first points to be scored, when Broncos half back Ben Hunt scored after a Broncos break. Corey Parker added the extras to make it 6-0. That’s the way the two sides went into half time in a gripping contest.
The second half didn’t start well for the Titans when Paul Carter was placed on report for a high shot on Parker. The Broncos prop added the penalty goal to make it 8-0 after 44 minutes.
The Broncos came close to extending the lead via Todd Lowrie, but minutes later, David Mead scooped up a Broncos kick and raced 99 metres to score a fantastic try to swing momentum back to the Titans after the Broncos had dominated the match. Aidan Sezer converted to make it 8-6.
In the 74th minute the match was decided.
Ben Barba was ready to catch a Titans bomb, but perhaps put off by the goal posts, decided to let it bounce. The ball bounced high and he took the ball, only for Sezer to steal it from his grasp and score a stunning try to give his side the lead for the first time. Sezer converted from in front to make it 12-8 and the Titans hung on to remain atop the NRL ladder.
The Titans have been very impressive in 2014, despite not having any superstars, they have a good mix od veterans and rising stars like Aidan Sezer. The Broncos have also been very good. but have been finding ways to lose the close matches, a habit they want to quickly break.
