2015 VB NSW Cup Round One Review

The opening round of the 2015 VB NSW Cup saw a number of close matches as all 12 sides looked to get their season of to a winning start.

The New Zealand Warriors began life under the watch of club legend Stacey Jones with a determined 26-18 victory over last year’s runners up the Newcastle Knights. Former Raider Matt Allwood was amongst the try scorers for the Warriors.

At Henson Park the Wests Tigers beat the Newtown Jets 24-14 despite being on the wrong end of a lop-sided penalty count. John Sila scored a hat-trick of tries in his first game for his new club after coming across from the Bulldogs.

The Mt Pritchard Mounties hung on to record a nail-biting 22-20 win over the Illawarra Cutters ar Aubrey Keech Reserve. Sam Williams led the Mounties around in style while for the Cutters, centre Euan Aitken scored two tries.

It could be another long year for the Sea Eagles after they were hammered 34-8 by the Wyong Roos. A 22-4 half time lead kept the Roos in control of the match with former NRL player Yileen ‘Buddy’Gordon grabbing a double.

The North Sydney Bears put a season of misery behind them withn an impressive 30-16 triumph over the Wentworthville Magpies. The Bears won just one game in 2014 but have already matched that with a convincing win.

The 2014 premiers, the Penrith Panthers held of a fast-finishing Bulldogs side to record a 26-20 victory at Pepper Stadium. Ben Murdoch-Masila was the stand out, scoring one try and setting up two others while former Rabbitohs hooker Apisai Koroisau impressed.
