Intrust Super Cup preview – Northern Pride v Redcliffe

Northern Pride v Redcliffe Dolphins at Barlow Park on Saturday, April 11 – 5.30pm

Round 6 opens up in Cairns for a game between two former premiers whose first 5 games in 2015 have only produced one win between them. Surprisingly, it is the reigning premiers Northern Pride who are the winless of the two teams, and they will be very keen to equal their opponents tally.

The Pride pushed Ipswich close last weekend, and could almost have snatched victory in the final minutes on a luckier day after being well down at half time. Redcliffe were also well down at half time and also provided a great fight back in the second half, although also ultimately unsuccessful against Burleigh.

The loss to Burleigh was a step backwards after the tremendous display against Norths on TV the weekend before, but they do retain their formidable 1-6-7-9 spine and a good forward pack, so you get the feeling that two good halves put together will see off just about any side in the Intrust Super Cup. Whether that will happen in Cairns remains to be seen.

Given how close the Pride got to the high flying Jets last weekend, and a return home to North Queensland, we’ll suggest they will break their 2015 duck. They also won this fixture 20-12 against the Dolphins last year. Although, 1 win from 6 rounds for either side will probably not be the start to the season that will ensure September football.
