Match Review

Cronulla Sharks made it back to back wins with a 22-6 over Newcastle Knights.

Cronulla dominated and looked strong throughout the game as Newcastle continuously conceded unnecessary errors. The home side were favourites going into the game and they did not disappoint their fans who sat through torrential rain for majority of the 80 minutes.

Wade Graham didn’t start the game well as he was limping in the opening minute of the game which wasn’t a good start for the Sharks.

Akuila Uate’s kick missed touch after the first penalty as Sosaia Feki kept the ball in the field of play to make a great start for the Sharks.

Newcastle knocked on in the fourth minute which left them with terrible momentum. Cronulla were put in a good position to put first points on the board. They responded with Michael Gordon successfully converting a penalty goal kick in the 7th minute. Newcastle Knights were not far behind with Tyrone Roberts replying with a penalty field goal in the 11th minute, leveling the score 2 all, after Andrew Fifita put a dangerous high tackle on Adam Clydsdale. Michael Gordon successfully kicked the third penalty field goal in the 21st minute as Valentine Holmes was hit high.

Jack Bird continued to impress and earn his #6 jersey scoring a terrific try, which was the first game of the game. This kept the Cronulla Sharks in from 8-2. Sharks were looking good in attack and Luke Lewis continued the action by scoring an unbelievable try, meaning back to back tries for Cronulla. Gerard Beale’s quick hands in coherence with the inside outside play has been very successful for the Cronulla Sharks as they execute it incredibly, leading 12-2. Luckily for the Knights Michael Gordon missed both conversions (0/2).

Newcastle were flat for the full 80 minutes and made many errors including countless amounts of knock ons, as they could not keep possession of the ball.

The second half consisted of Ben Barba scoring a brilliant try off Feki’s ‘impossible’ pass but Holmes failed to convert. The weather conditions were rapidly changing throughout and weren’t in favour of the game as the rain was torrential. Michael Ennis came up with the best grubber kick in the 55th minute and two Sharks players followed it through brilliantly but it unfortunately hit the uprights, denying Cronulla four points. Uate kept the Knights hopes up after scoring a try in the 69th minute, Sharks continued to lead 16-6.

The Cronulla Sharks successfully ended the game on a high as Chris Heighington went over the line with the first successful conversion by Valentine Holmes. The Cronulla Sharks played concise, effective and impressive rugby and deservingly won 22-6.
