Match Review

James Roberts is the hero for Gold Coast Titans in scoring a hat-trick to down Parramatta Eels 24-16 at Pirtek Stadium on Saturday.

Roberts hat-trick was completed on the hour when he intercepted Nathan Peats’ pass inside the Titans ten metre line to run the length of the field to score.  This put the Titans ahead 24-16 going into the final twenty.

Sezer set up Will Zillman’s 50th National Rugby League try with fourteen remaining.  Roberts set up David Mead to score in the corner with seven minutes left to give the Titans a commanding eighteen point win.  Anthony Don scoring on full-time to make it twenty-six unanswered points against a broken Eels outfit.

The home side started out strongly when Corey Norman made a break down the left hand touchline before throwing an intercept pass.  Early signs suggested Parramatta were ready to put last weekend’s loss to the Tigers behind them.  Today the Titans made them pay for any mistake they made in attack and that was the difference in the game.

The Titans were first on the board after ten minutes when Canberra-bound Aidan Sezer put the coal train Dave Taylor into space on a thirty metres run to score under the posts.

Ryan James caught Chris Sandow high midway through the half.  James already reported for a high shot on Will Hopoate earlier in the half.  With the Eels on the attack Anthony Watmough was certain to score when the ball was stripped out.  From the repeat set Danny Wicks scored his first try since returning from a ban which leveled scores at 6-all.

Immediately the Titans hit back when James Roberts plucked out of the air Anthony Watmough’s wayward pass inside his thirty to run untouched to the line.

Parramatta continued to attack the Titans right hand defense and came up trumps when Norman flick passed to John Folau who then found Reece Robinson to score in the corner.  The home side hit the lead 16-12 three minutes from the break with Sandow’s flat ball sending Will Hopoate over next to the posts.

Roberts had his second ten minutes after the break following an Eels mistake that gave the Titans prime position to attack as they hit the lead 18-16.

The Eels form seems to have eluded them since their great win over South Sydney.  Two consecutive losses leaves them with two wins heading into their match against Newcastle next Sunday.

Gold Coast join them on two wins and face Penrith at CBUS Super Stadium next Saturday.

Man of the Match: James Roberts (Gold Coast Titans)
