Daly Cherry Evans (DCE) is the talk of the town on whether he should be handed a Australian Kangaroos jersey this year for the Anzac Test between Australia and New Zealand on May 1. With the test being just around the corner Tim Sheens (Coach of Australia) has a very tough decision establishing who is chosen for the team. Especially with the likes of up and coming young talented halfback Ben Hunt from Brisbane Broncos, Queensland (QLD) favourite Johnathan Thurston from North QLD Cowboys and Melbourne Storm Cooper Cronk to make a return. All four players will be hoping for the #7 Australian jersey.
Johnathan Thurston has been in incredible form over the last couple weeks, leading his North QLD Cowboys to victory. Ben Hunt has also been a star throughout Bronco’s games especially in round 6 in extra time, after failing to convert a drop kick for the win in extra time he scored an unbelievable try to secure the Brisbane Bronco’s the win against Sydney Roosters.
After Cherry Evans’ nightmare start to the 2015 season for the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles, will Sheens be looking to give young talented Bronco’s halfback Ben Hunt a chance or have faith in Cherry Evans. The media attention has not been shy of the Manly halfback but the question every one is wondering is will Sheens include him in the Australian side next to greats such as Billy Slater, Cooper Cronk and Johnathan Thurston? DCE has had a terrible experience when being included in the team from being benched for majority of one game to unluckily coming off due to injury in another. He definitely has a great knowledge and understanding of how the Australian team works together and their structure from first hand experience playing for his country.
It would be a risk including Ben Hunt into the side but I believe if Cherry Evans’ form improves before May 1st (ANZAC test), there is a high chance he will be chosen to start due to his previous experience. Cooper Cronk does deserve to keep his place but I believe it’s time to change things up for Australia and put Daly on to start with. With him starting on the field this will boost his confidence and hopefully assist helping Australia win. I also believe Hunt deserves to be included and be part of the Australian team but is not ready to play for his country just yet. Previous experience and consistency are the two main ingredients to be selected which is how Cameron Smith, Johnathan Thurston and Billy Slater and are always secured a spot.
It will all come down to Sheen’s going for the safe option or taking a risk and giving DCE that confidence boost he requires.
