Kingstone Press Championship Round 16 Review – Featherstone Rovers 20-44 Halifax

Richard Marshall will have been one happy coach on Saturday evening as his Halifax side kept their top four aspirations alive with a 44-20 win at Featherstone. The visitors got off to a great start through former Featherstone man Tommy Saxton, the winger touched down for the first of three tries in the match. Steve Tyrer converted but Fax were pegged back when Will Sharp applied the downward pressure after a grubber courtesy of Gareth Moore. Paul Sykes couldn’t add the extras. Saxton had his brace on 20 minutes, and not soon after, Featherstone player Luke Cooper was sin-binned which left Halifax with an extra man and it was an advantage they’d make the most of. Gareth Potts notched his first of three tries after catching a Murrell kick superbly. The penalties kept clocking up for Featherstone and Saxton completed his hat-trick before the half was out. Things got better for the visitors five minutes down the line when Potts scored his second with minimal time remaining. At half-time, Halifax had a 22 point buffer with the score at 26-4. After the break, a quick couple of scores for Featherstone came from Alex Foster and Gareth Moore as they got back to within ten points but it was to be Fax’s day. Danny Craven and Tyrer furthered their side’s advantage before Hardman scored a consolation for the hosts. Potts and Craven ended Featherstone’s misery with a try apiece, sending the Fax fans into raptures with the thought of a top four challenge not too far from their minds.
