NRL Mid Season Awards
We have reached the half way point in the regular season of the NRL. It has been a whirlwind of a season so far with no lack of entertainment and plenty to talk about. If the season ended today the Brisbane Broncos would be walking away with the minor premiership. What other awards would be dished out if the season ended today and how will the competition look after 26 rounds?
Dally M Player of the Year- Jonathan Thurston
Thurston is currently leading the Dally M ladder with 16 points. He has a narrow lead over Aaron Woods, Benji Marshall, Matt Moylan and Blake Austin. Thurston looks likely to get his fourth Dally M medal as the Cowboys continue their winning streak however if the Cowboys start to lose games he could easily fall behind. Aaron Woods, despite his team only winning four games, is in second place so if the Tigers find some form he could start dropping three pointers on a regular basis. Matt Moylan is basically out of the running due to his injury. Austin and Marshall are in red hot form and could easily challenge for top spot.
Prediction – Aaron Woods
Rookie of the Year – Kane Elgey
He has been consistently putting in good performances for a struggling Titans squad and while he hasn’t shown much wow factor I think that he will continue to improve throughout the season. Jack Bird, Valentine Holmes, Sio Siua Taukeiaho all deserve honorable mentions.
Coach of the Year – Paul McGregor
He has completely turned the Dragons around. He did a clear out of the roster in off-season and has turned the team into a very professional looking side.
Top Tryscorer – Curtis Rona
He should hold this lead all the way to the end as the Bulldogs should continue to improve throughout the season.
Top Point Scorer – Jarrod Croker
Croker has a formidable lead and given the Raiders current ability to score points I don’t think he will slow down any time soon.
Try of the Year – James Tedesco – Kevin Naiqama superman flick pass
