Serious injury forces abandonment of Intrust Super Cup match

Matt Pritchard with additional reporting by Shannon Meyer

Sunshine Coast player James Ackerman is in a Brisbane Hosptial with major head injuries after being felled in a tackle during their clash with Norths Devils at Bishop Park yesterday.

The game was only four minutes old when prop forward Ackerman was injured.  Brisbane’s Courier Mail reporting that “witnesses described the scenes at Bishop Park as the worst they had seen on a football field”.

In an article posted in the Sunshine Coast Daily in December 2014 they said Ackerman, 24, earned a Broncos’ youth contract while at Redcliffe but was sick of missing time with his children Oliver and Milly.

NothingButLeague Intrust Super Cup reporter Shannon Meyer said this tragedy couldn’t come at a worse time for the tight knit community.

“The even sadder fact is the back story of a player who moved back to the Sunshine Coast for the 2015 season to spend more time with his two young children, after playing at Redcliffe previously.”

“In a week where the big interstate game is thought of as life and death with the comments in the press back and forth, an event like this does put things into perspective.”

Our best wishes are with the family of James Ackerman and the Sunshine Coast Falcons family.

Meanwhile Ipswich Jets superstar Marmin Barba was taken to hospital suffering from severe hydration following their win over Central Queensland Capras 52-6 at North Ipswich Reserve.
