Kingstone Press Round 18 Match Review – Whitehaven 24 Batley Bulldogs 12

One of the best Whitehaven performances so far this season allowed them to the double over Batley for the second successive season.

Haven played their best rugby during the opening quarter in which the Bulldogs defence had no answer to. They scored two tries in that time through Grant Gore and Craig Calvert with Louis Jouffret converting both times to give them a 12 point lead after 15 minutes and the game looked over despite it being in it’s infancy.

This changed just after the 20 minute mark when Haven had two players sin binned within two minutes to play with 11 men for 7 minutes, despite this Batley’s poor show continued and couldn’t use their two man advantage during that period.

Haven regained their two men and scored just before the hooter through the experienced Calvert going over again. Jouffret converted, 18-0 at half time. Batley need to score first to try and force any sort on contest.

The second half was more of that contest with batley actually winning the half. They scored through ex-Wigan and Haven full back Shaun Ainscough in the 7th minute of the second half after a pop up pass from centre Elliott Cosgrove. That was the started Batley needed but they didn’t seem to be able to kick on and get the points they needed.

The home side scored again through Louis Jouffret just after the hour mark after a Chris Taylor break and good work from him, Jordan Sigismeau and Jouffret allowed them to go over. The Frenchman converted his own try to bring back their 18 point cushion leaving the visitors needing a point a minute and despite a try from Joe Chandler 8 minutes from the end, the double was completed at the start of an important period for all sides in the bottom area of the table.
