Kingstone Press Championship Match Review – Workington 12 Leigh Centurions 50

Leigh continued on their push for Super League heading into the middle 8’s with after a comprehensive first half performance saw them 32-0 up at half time and secure a 38 point victory over Workington.

Despite the half time scoreline it was 16 minutes before Leigh crossed for their first points through Ryan Brierley crashed over, that was the first of three tries in 8 minutes. Tom Spencer and Martyn Ridyard crossed in that 8 minute period.

Later on in the half another three tries were scored in a 8 minute period. Jonny Pownall crossed after a well timed pass from Ridyard in the 32nd minute, 5 minutes later Adam Higson crossed with a skilful one handed touchdown in at the corner. The final score came after the hooter and Town were on the attack, Jamie Doran stabbed a kick through it bounced back and Brierley was the first to react. He kicked the ball forward and outpacing the Town defence to pick the ball up and touchdown in at the corner.

Town fans must have been worrying at half time but the second half was a lot more encouraging despite them being beat 18-12 they were some signs ahead of the big game in the West Cumbrian derby against Whitehaven.

Town scored first and it was through Jarrad Stack after a high kick from Jarrod Sammut, stack rose and grabbed the ball and put it down. Sammut converted.

Kurt Haggerty extended the Leigh lead again after a high pass from Hopkins allowed Haggerty to go in next to the posts.

Town scored again through Dual Reg Lewis Tierney as he skilfully put the ball down in the corner just before he was put into the touch and Town lead the half 12-6.

But two final Leigh tries from Micky Higham and Jake Emmitt allowed Leigh to hit 50 and remain only two points behind Bradford ahead of their game against Hunslet in a rearranged game this Wednesday Night.
