Kingstone Press Championship Round 22 – Sheffield Eagles 38-28 Featherstone Rovers

Sheffield Eagles sealed their place in the Qualifiers with a ten point victory over fifth placed Featherstone Rovers. The Rovers needed a win to keep in contention for a top four spot but despite going 10-0 up in the early stages as well as keeping close to the Eagles throughout the tie, they couldn’t quite take the spoils in this one. Thomas Minns scored four tries in the match, a highlight for the Rovers, and it was the young centre who got the ball rolling with a score on eight minutes. Paul Sykes added to Featherstone’s early dominance with a try of his own before Sheffield entered the clash with three consecutive tries to end the half on a high. Michael Knowles, Duane Straugheir and Rob Worrincy all touched down for the steel city side in the final eight minutes to really hammer the message home that the Eagles weren’t willing to leave their top four fate until the final round of matches. Menzie Yere scored the first try in the second half for Sheffield but they couldn’t kick on from there, Reni Maitua and Minns replied for Rovers to get them back to within a score. Worrincy completed his brace for the Eagles in the 58th minute but the visitors weren’t going away without a fight and Minns scored his third try three minutes after Worrincy had extended Sheffield’s lead. Scott Turner returned serve for Mark Aston’s side but, yet again, Minns came good for Featherstone on a very good day for Hull KR’s first signing of 2016. The final try of proceedings went to former Featherstone three-quarter Sam Smeaton after he intercepted a pass from Andy Ellis.
