Kingstone Press Championship Round 23 – Halifax 20-16 Bradford Bulls

Definitely an interesting indicator as to what may happen in the Qualifiers. Richard Marshall has done a sterling job at Halifax in his maiden year and it could still get better as the West Yorkshire side take on four Super League sides and three fellow Championship teams in the next couple of months. 11 minutes in came the first score of the match and Mitch Cahalane powered over the whitewash for the hosts. Steve Tyrer converted, and he did on the 30 minute mark after Ben Heaton touched down from a Ben Johnston pass. Tyrer added a penalty goal before half-time to make the score 14-0. After the break, Bradford came out all guns blazing and Jay Pitts notched to give them a perfect start. Shaw added the extras. Nearly ten minutes later and Adam Henry cut the deficit further with a four pointer which turned into six after Shaw’s second conversion of the match. As the final quarter arrived Bradford were in the ascendancy when Omari Caro scored. However, Shaw didn’t convert and Bradford’s two point advantage was relinquished when Tyrer kicked a penalty goal. Chev Walker was sin-binned with five minutes to go and the pressure was well and truly on the visitors to hold out. But their downfall came with ball in hand when a pass went to ground and Tyrer latched onto it and sprinted over from 40 metres out. Jubilant scenes hit The Shay, and deservedly so. A brilliant win for Fax in preparation for the Qualifiers.
