Wigan Warriors began their Super 8s campaign with a 30-22 win over Huddersfield at the DW Stadium on Friday night.
The win, which came courtesy of a fine second half fightback from a 10-6 half time deficit, sees Shaun Wane’s men move level on points with leaders Leeds, who play Warrington at Headingley tonight.
The Warriors produced four second half tries to seal the points, with the fourth-placed Giants two points clear of Castleford, who play Hull FC this evening.
The Giants started on top and used their fierce left edge attack to full effect, Jermaine McGillvary crossing for two almost identical tries.
In a frantic start, both sides came up with errors, but Huddersfield remained on top thanks to extended periods of steely defence.
But Wigan finally slashed through the visitors’ defence thanks to a fine run by Liam Farrell as the minutes ticked down to half time.
And, after an underwhelming first half performance, the Warriors looked a different side in the second half as they went in for two early tries, through Dom Manfredi and George Williams, to turn the game on its’ head.
But Huddersfield fought back as Jack Hughes powered over against his parent club, but Larne Patrick, a Giants’ loanee, returned the favour to restore Wigan’s eight-point cushion.
Eorl Crabtree crashed over to give the West Yorkshire side a fighting chance as the final quarter approached, but Dom Crosby sealed victory for Wigan.
NothingButLeague Man of the Match: George Williams. The young half back appears to be growing into his role and finding some consistently classy performances.
