Bradford started their season with a 22-12 win over potential top four contenders Featherstone Rovers at the Provident Stadium. An Omari Caro hat-trick led the way for James Lowes’ side to gain victory on home turf.
Despite the end result, it was Rovers who struck first through Danny Craven after ten minutes. Territory was gained after a Lee Gaskell kick was charged down and Rovers took full advantage. A few minutes later came the Bulls’ opening try through Gaskell. The half-back was his evasive self and found his way over the whitewash. Caro then bagged two tries to put the Bulls out in front. Addy and Gaskell with the respective assists as Bradford were threatening to take charge at 16-6 up. But Featherstone replied before the break as new signing Anthony Thackeray sauntered his way over the Bulls try line in emphatic fashion. The former Dewsbury half-back delicately kicked over the Bradford defence before picking the ball up and touching down. The upcoming second half was perfectly poised with only four points, (16-12 to the hosts), being the difference between the two sides. To say the final 40 minutes didn’t live up to expectations would be an understatement. A lone Caro try with a conversion from Addy were the only points scored in the second period. Nonetheless it was an opening day win for the Bulls, something that coach Lowes will want his players to build on leading up to this weekend’s match against Whitehaven. Featherstone will be looking to gain their first win next Sunday against Batley.
